CMU Tepper MBA Essays: Analysis & Tips for 2025-26
Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business’ MBA combines rigorous business training with data-driven decision-making in a highly collaborative setting. Located in Pittsburgh, a hub for technology, healthcare, and entrepreneurship, Tepper attracts candidates who want to grow into analytical leaders from across the world. CMU Tepper MBA essays are your opportunity to connect your goals, experiences, and personal growth with the school’s values. In this post, I am going to break down the prompts and explore how you can approach them strategically.
Goals Video Essay
We know this is an important component of your decision to attend business school. We take it seriously as well. Please describe your post-MBA career goals.
It would be helpful to consider the following information in your response:
- You have up to 2 minutes to respond to this question.
- Please be as specific as possible. If you have not yet identified specific companies, that is okay. Just tell us what interests you for your next role or company. What about the industry, company, or functional role is appealing to you?
- If you have any criteria you are using to evaluate career opportunities, please share those as well. We may have great opportunities to add to your list.
- How does this post-MBA career goal relate to your long-term career plan?
Most business schools have a goals essay as a part of their MBA application. However, Tepper’s use of a video essay for career goals sets it apart. This format allows the adcom to evaluate not just your career vision but also your confidence and ability to communicate under time constraints.
How to approach it
- Clarity and Specificity: In two minutes, you don’t have space to meander. Clearly state your post-MBA goal – target industry, role, and organizations. For example – I aim to transition from software engineering into product management at a tech firm such as Amazon or Google in the US.
- Why It Appeals to You: Why does this goal excite you? Are there any problem statements you want to solve, like building innovative products, influencing strategic decisions, or leading cross-functional teams? Tepper values purpose-driven candidates who can articulate why a career path matters to them.
- Evaluation Criteria: Mention what you are seeking in your post-MBA role, such as growth potential, innovation-driven cultures, or global exposure. This tells the adcom that you have researched your goals and are intentional about them.
- Connection to Long-Term Vision: Show how your immediate post-MBA role connects to your long-term goal, whether leading a division, launching your own venture, or driving change in a specific industry.
Tips
- Practice for Delivery: Ensure your tone is conversational and you are not repeating a memorized response. A natural, confident delivery will make a stronger impression than a rehearsed one.
- Structure Matters: Use the following flow to structure your response – immediate post-MBA goal -> why it appeals to you -> what you seek in this role -> long-term goal and how post-MBA short-term goal connects to it.
- Show Energy: Even if your goals are highly analytical, let your passion come through. Tepper looks for dynamic leaders who inspire, not just strategize.
Need Help With Your MBA Applications?
Required Essay – Choose One
There is one required essay (maximum 500 words) for all Tepper MBA applicants (except college seniors). You are now able to choose which essay question resonates most with you and how you can present your best application. Please choose 1 of the following 2 questions. We do not have a preference on which question you answer.
Option 1
At Tepper, we value leaders who can make confident decisions when facing complexity and uncertainty. Tell us about a time when you had to take action without having all of the answers. How did you navigate the situation and what was the outcome? (500 words)
This essay highlights on one of Tepper’s core values: decision-making in ambiguity. The school trains leaders to balance analytics with judgment, and this prompt tests whether you inherently have that ability.
How to approach it
- Choose a High-Stakes Situation: Select an example where you had to take a decision without perfect data, whether at work or outside. Examples, launching a new initiative, leading a team with incomplete information, or making a critical recommendation under time pressure.
- Demonstrate Decision-Making Process: Show the adcom not just what you did, but how you thought through the problem. Did you analyze the available data, seek input from stakeholders, rely on first principles, or balance competing priorities?
- Show Leadership: Even if you were not the designated leader, highlight how you guided others, influenced decisions, or took ownership. This demonstrates ability to lead beyond authority.
- Outcome and Reflection: Share the result, even if you couldn’t succeed, and what you learned about leading through uncertainty.
Tips
- Don’t pick a trivial example with no real stakes or consequences.
- Avoid stories that where everything magically worked out. Adcom wants to see your struggle, judgment, and growth.
Option 2
The Tepper School of Business is committed to helping students reach their full potential by supporting their professional and personal transformation. How do you hope to transform, both professionally and personally, during your time in the program? Please describe your development goals and steps you plan to achieve them. (500 words)
This essay is forward-looking and reflective, asking you to explain your vision for your MBA journey. It allows you to show fit with Tepper’s offerings and your own growth mindset.
How to approach it
- Identify Gaps in Your Profile: Explain the skills you have gained through your work experience so far and list skills or experiences you think you lack to meet your goals. For instance, maybe are good at analytics but want to build stronger leadership and strategic thinking skills.
- Connect to Tepper Resources: Mention how Tepper’s unique features, like its focus on analytics, the Leadership Development Center, the tight-knit community, or experiential learning opportunities, will support your transformation.
- Balance Professional and Personal Growth: Talk about technical skills (finance, product strategy, consulting toolkit) as well as personal areas (confidence in leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, emotional intelligence).
If you have a clear sense of your developmental needs and can tie them directly to Tepper’s offerings, this essay can be a powerful way to demonstrate fit and vision.

Optional Essay
Is there anything else that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee as we evaluate your application? If you believe your credentials and essays represent you fairly, you should not feel obligated to answer this question. This essay is intended to provide a place for you to add information that you think is important but is not covered elsewhere in the application. This could include clarification of your employment or academic record, choice of recommenders or helpful context for the admissions committee in reviewing your application.
Are you a re-applicant? Use the optional essay to explain how your candidacy has strengthened since your last application.
How to approach it
The optional essay should only be used if you need to:
- Address a gap in employment, low GPA, or test score concerns.
- Explain unusual recommenders or job changes.
- Provide important context not covered elsewhere.
- If you are a reapplicant.
Keep it factual, concise, and professional. Avoid repeating content from other essays or squeezing in achievements to strengthen your candidacy; only add critical information that is necessary to complete your application.
Since the word limit is not mentioned here, limit your essay to 500 words as that is the prescribed word limit for the other essays.
Final Thoughts
CMU Tepper MBA essays may look straightforward, but they are nuanced and reflective. The video goals essay tests your ability to communicate clearly and authentically in real time. The required essay choice lets you showcase either your past leadership under uncertainty or your vision for transformation—both key themes for a school that values analytical rigor and personal growth.
Above all, success in these essays comes down to three things:
- Clarity of career goals and motivations.
- Demonstrated alignment with Tepper’s values of analytical decision-making and collaborative leadership.
- A growth mindset that shows you are ready to transform during the MBA journey.
If you approach each essay with focus, authenticity, and specificity, you will present yourself as a strong fit for Tepper’s dynamic and data-driven community.
