Essay 1

Why are you applying to the HEC MBA Program now? What is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your MBA, and how will the HEC MBA contribute to the achievement of this objective? (3,500 characters)

This is HEC’s version of the classic career goals essay with the addition of why now and why HEC Paris.

How to approach it

  • Start with the motivation behind pursuing MBA and address the timing. The adcom wants to know that you are intentional in your decision to pursue an MBA – if you have reached a point in your career where further growth requires the skill set, network, and international exposure that an MBA provides. You need to clearly address why now – not earlier or later – is the right time to embark on an MBA.
  • Note that the prompt says ‘the professional objective that will guide your career choice’ instead of ‘career goals.’ This indicates that merely listing out your goals – target roles, organizations, locations, etc – is not enough. You must go beyond and demonstrate a sense of purpose. What motivates you, and what impact do you wish to create with your MBA?
  • Finally, tie everything to HEC’s strengths — leadership development, strong ties to consulting and luxury sectors, and its location in Paris, a global hub for business and culture. The school has a diverse cohort (90% international students), so highlight how that environment will prepare you for your global ambitions.

Essay 2

What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (2,000 characters)

This essay moves from examining your professional vision to understanding your human side.

How to approach it

  • Your choice of story matters as much as how you tell it. Some applicants choose stories like promotions or professional milestones. While there is nothing inherently wrong with choosing professional stories, this essay is a chance to show the adcom your personal side – overcoming adversity, building something meaningful outside of work, mentoring someone, or a personal transformation are all good examples.
  • Notice that the prompt says ‘life achievement’ and not ‘professional achievement.’ The adcom wants to see what you personally value. Do you define achievement in terms of impact, resilience, relationships, or learning? Your answer will reveal your values, priorities, and sense of self.

Essay 3

Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (2,000 characters)

This prompt reveals HEC’s emphasis on values. They want leaders who can navigate today’s competitive business landscape with not just strategy but also integrity. This essay shows the adcom whether you will represent HEC well in the business world.

How to approach it

  • Choose a real ethical challenge that had serious repercussions. While it doesn’t have to be grand in terms of impact it should involve real stakes — a conflict of interest, potential loss of business, choosing between short-term gain and long-term principle, or a situation where you had to stand by your decision without support.
  • Show your leadership. HEC emphasizes how leadership and ethics are ‘inevitably intertwined.’ So, focus on how you used your judgment, courage, and influence in that moment to make the ethical choice, even if it wasn’t the easy one.
  • Don’t forget to conclude with the learnings and reflecting on how the situation influenced you. The adcom wants to see how this ethical dilemma impacted you – did it shape your worldview, your decision-making, and your leadership style?

Essay 4

Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (2,000 characters)

This is perhaps the most unique prompt of the HEC Paris MBA essays. It tests applicants’ creative thinking and reflective storytelling abilities, and is your chance to truly stand out.

How to approach it

  • Understand what the prompt is trying to assess. At first glance, this essay may feel like an exercise in creative writing. But remember that you are applying for an MBA; the adcom is still looking for traits of leadership, purpose, and impact in whatever ‘alternative life’ you imagine. The school wants to see how your core values and leadership skills transcend your current profession.
  • Choose a path where you can still lead and influence. Examples: leading global efforts for ocean conservation as a marine biologist, inspiring cultural movement as a musician, influencing generations of students to think critically as a teacher, building legacies as a conservation architect, etc.
  • Avoid clichés or superficial answers like ‘billionaire philanthropist.’ Instead, explain why a different path resonates with you. The best answers blend imagination with traits that adcoms look for in successful candidates – vision, influence, and a desire to create impact. You need to show that you aspire to lead, contribute, and make a difference no matter what path you choose in life.

Essay 5

Please choose from one of the following essays (2,000 characters):
a) What monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why?
b) Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyse it.
c) What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc).

This essay is not about career or leadership but about intellectual curiosity, cultural perspective, and communication. It demonstrates your ability to express original thought and engage with culture and ideas beyond business. After all, HEC has one of the most diverse MBA cohorts among leading global business schools.

How to approach it

  • Option A (monument/site): This is a good option for applicants who want to highlight cultural pride or storytelling ability. A chance to show you are globally aware and rooted in your heritage.
  • Option B (overrated book/movie): The most challenging option. This prompt tests your ability to argue persuasively. This is not as much about the book/movie you choose as it is about your ability to analyze, critique, and defend your perspective.
  • Option C (figure you admire): The safest option, but avoid clichés like Steve Jobs or Elon Musk unless you bring a fresh angle. The key is to reveal your values through the person you choose.

If there is anything else you would like to share with us that has not already been shared elsewhere in your file, please feel free to use this space. (6,300 characters)

Write this one only if you must. Given the high word limit, you might be tempted to fill the essay with redundant information or repeated content from the other essays/resume. Resist the temptation and use this essay only to address gaps in employment, low GPA, or context the adcom needs to understand.

What These Essays Reveal About HEC Paris

Put together, these essay prompts clearly indicate what the adcom at HEC values:

  • Essay 1 ensures that you have thought through your career and timing, and are intentional with your decision to pursue an MBA
  • Essay 2 and Essay 3 explore your values, ethics, and humility
  • Essay 4 tests your ability to think beyond conventional paths
  • Essay 5 highlights global perspective, communication, and cultural awareness

In other words, HEC is looking for not just future CEOs, but thoughtful, ethical, and imaginative leaders who can navigate complexity in a global context.

Final Tips

  • Balance professional and personal stories. You don’t have to restrict every essay to professional experiences. HEC is explicitly inviting you to showcase multiple dimensions of your life.
  • Be reflective, not just descriptive. Focus more on your learnings from an incident rather than the incident itself.
  • Embrace creativity, especially in Essays 4 and 5. Don’t be afraid to push your imagination and explore different angles of your journey.
  • Stay authentic. Admissions officers can easily spot fake/embellished stories. So set aside your desire to be perfect and be authentic and vulnerable.
